EMVCo

EMVCo is a crucial global organization that manages, maintains, and enhances the EMV Integrated Circuit Card Specifications. These specifications lay the groundwork for the functionality of chip-based payment cards and acceptance devices, such as point-of-sale terminals, and ATMs.

EMVCo is collectively owned by six major members of the global payment industry:

  • American Express
  • Discover
  • JCB
  • MasterCard
  • UnionPay
  • Visa

These entities have an equal share in the organization, but EMVCo’s influence extends beyond these owners to include a diverse array of stakeholders in the payment industry, from merchants and financial institutions to payment processors and technology vendors.

EMVCo’s mission is to facilitate worldwide interoperability and acceptance of secure payment transactions. This is achieved by evolving the EMV Specifications and related testing processes, in line with advancing technology and market requirements.

The organization actively engages the payment industry and its stakeholders in its activities, promoting collaboration and input on its strategic direction.
