Card Verification Value 2 (CVV2)

The Card Verification Value 2 (CVV2) is a three-digit code imprinted on the back of Visa cards. It serves an equivalent function as the CVC2 on MasterCard or the CID on American Express cards.

Installed as an extra protective layer for card-not-present transactions, the CVV2 is requested by merchants to confirm that the cardholder has the physical card. This contributes significantly to reducing the probability of fraud or unauthorized transactions, as the CVV2 number is not embedded in the card’s magnetic stripe or chip information.

The inclusion of the CVV2 in the transaction process fosters a safer and more secure payment environment, reinforcing the trust of consumers in digital commerce.
